Bella Como, in Italian or "Beautiful Como" in English
is often considered an understatement. Lake Como, especially
the centre (Menaggio, Bellagio and Varenna) provide
some of the finest views and sceneries in the world.
Mentioned throughout the centuries, famous people are
drawn to it again and again.....
Bella
Como - Where to see it....
To experience the
true magnificence of the Lake you need a number
of things in place: a) The air needs to be clear,
as sometimes there can be a haziness to the Lake,
due to its altitude and vast expanse of water
b) The sun needs to be shining and the lake calm.
Our favourite time is winter for views, with
snow capped peaks, crystal clear air and early
morning. You can just sit at a cafe at the Cernobbio
ferry staging, or in the piazza in Menaggio and
just admire. Conversely, try an elevated view.
There are countless walks and mountain roads/tracks
from which you can stop and look down thousands
of feet at the lake and up towards the edge of
the Alps.
What
to see on Bella Como
Apart from the mountains
which descend quickly to the centre of
Lake Como and the wonderful ambience created
by this magical lake, the history of Lake
Como is rich and has allowed many artisans
to create wonderful architectural pieces,
most notably the famous Villas,
some now owned by celebrities and some
by the local councils and charities. Below
is a shot of Villa Balbianello from the
Lake on an October day this year. If you
can get the use of a boat then this will
give a completely different perspective.
Just
views and more views.....
Walks, hike,
take a lake plane, drive and almost wherever
you go you will get breath taking views.
Conditions aren't always ideal of course,
but even on the windiest day when the
lake is wave laden, or on the rare snowy
day, the combination of mountains, lake
and architecture compliment each other
to provide amazing and memorable scenes.
