Lake Como Fashion - Time of Year

First of all consider what time of year you are visiting Lake Como. The temperature and climate of Lake Como can vary quite considerably but in general is temperate all year around:

Spring: Still some snow on the peaks and there fore at altitude it can be a bit chilly. If there is a wind blowing across the Lake then you will notice the chill even more. We would recommend taking several layers, waterproof if it looks like rain or a light coat, plus a cardigan/sweater.

Summer: As you would expect this is short sleeve weather when the sun is shining. Being close to water with on and offshore breezes in early morning and evening their may well be a chill, so a light cardigan/sweater is recommended or light jacket at these times. Humidity can occasionally be a problem but in our experience quite limited. If however you are prone to suffering in these conditions, light loose clothes are recommended.

Autumn: For Autumn read Spring, without the snow. Like many mild european climes, getting chillier earlier and the lake wind arises mealier as dusk arrives earlier and the land cools.

Winter: Winters are not as cold as you would expect being at the base of the Alps. There are some snowy days per year and temperatures can plunge to -10C. Generally however above freezing in the 4-14C range. So dress accordingly and watch the weather forecast.

if you intend to go hiking on the mountains these can reach over 3000m and the temperature may well be 5C lower with an even bigger wind chill factor added to this.

Fashion on Lake Como

You will notice that Italians are often well dressed, especially at certain times of the week. Italians take pride in their appearance and on weekends they will often preen their feathers and parade their finest.

You will notice that trends are closely followed, but there are some stable fashions and products amongst the middle aged and elite. Padded jackets, quality english shoes and suits, long Italian coats, dark skirts and the ubiquitous dark glasses.

Although dressing up is a respected part of Italian life, the influx of tourist has made them more tolerant and accepting of others. The small local restaurants and pizzerias are all happy with jeans and shirts, but places such as the Villa D'Este still insist on dress code, so check beforehand if you are planning a special occasion.

Buying Clothes and Fashion Accessories

This depends on your budget and needs. Como itself has a lot of clothes and fashion shops. Many of the other smaller towns, such as Varenna or Menaggio have a few shops with limited selections. Bellagio has a few more but all tend to be slightly more expensive than the city with limited selections. For really upmarket fashion, especially for watches and shoes, visit Lugano!

Our advice is to buy before you arrive, be ready for activity and with some nice casual wear for the evenings. We have provided some links to the right to give you a feel for current fashions and to save some money. These range from economical to expensive and cover camping to cavorting!
